Use Exercise To Fight Childhood Obesity

Monday, May 31st, 2010

There are so many demands these days on everyones time. Kids are often stretched thin with classes, homework, projects and after school activities. We all know what parents go through and how busy our days are. When we do get family time it’s important to make the most of it.

When your schedule is packed, any time that can serve a dual purpose is a ray of light. Instead of you trying to find time to exercise alone, get the entire family together to exercises. This way, each person gets activity and you can use the time to bond.

When you get your exercise with your family you’re turning your daily exercise obligation into something much more enjoyable. Working out alone can seem so tedious because you don’t get the motivation and accountability that you get with a group. Exercising with your family takes what used to be a chore and turns it into having fun together.

Family fitness time has many benefits:

1. Everyone participates and gains better fitness.

2. You can challenge each other.

3. You all start to think about eating well too.

4. You make sure you fit it into your schedule because it’s fun.

To keep everyone involved let each person be in charge on different days. They get to pick out the exercise of the day and they get to lead the group. Children will stay engaged when they get to make decisions and you might be surprised at what they come up with.

Try not to get stuck in a rut by repeating an exercise that everyone likes. Eventually, everyone will get bored. Throw in some weight training along with the aerobics. By turning a part of your house into a weight lifting area with a few dumbbells you can introduce your kids to the importance of strength training.

No time to exercise in your busy day? Chances are there are others in your family that need the physical activity but have limited time as well. Decide to exercise together as a family to carve out the time you need to stay healthy. Not only do you benefit by being healthier, but the people you love the most do the same, and you get to spend quality time together to boot.
